Why we must remember that a dog is for life

We don’t deserve dogs. It really is that simple. Dogs are amazing, loving creatures that have so much compassion. While most of us cherish dogs and want to spend as much time with them as we can, some people just take them for granted or worse mistreat them. A recent story has gone viral of one incredible dog that was abandoned. How anyone could abandon any dog let alone this calm beauty is an absolute mystery.

The old expression “a dog is for life not just for Christmas” comes to mind when you hear the following story. Ellie is a purebred Blue Lacy. Blue Lacy dogs are intelligent, intense, active, and alert. They have been bred to be both hunting and herding dogs and are known for their incredible determination. When Ellie’s picture went viral at a dog shelter she was not showing any traits of the active dog she was born to be.

Instead, she was clinging on to a large teddy bear, her only possession and looked incredibly frightened. While we don’t know her full story, it is likely a common one. Ellie had all of her shots, all of her papers and appeared to be well looked after yet she was abandoned. Whether she was not performing the duties she was hired for as a working dog, or perhaps the family’s plans had simply changed and they felt they had no time or space for a dog.

Whatever the reason, whenever you get a dog you can’t just think about your current situation you have to think about your future and what could happen. Dogs are a significant financial and time burden and if you can’t commit to one you should never start.

Ellie was abandoned in a shelter that actively euthanizes dogs to create space. One family’s lack of foresight could have resulted in the premature death of this beautiful animal. Luckily that didn’t happen. While the dog was abandoned in a shelter in Texas a man in Florida happened to hear about the incredible pet and jumped at the opportunity to adopt the dog. TWD transport is a company that specializes in transporting rescue dogs all across America. They were able to bring Ellie to her new owner in Florida.

We have since seen Ellie and although she still looks a little reserved as she gets used to her new surroundings, it is clear that she is now in a loving home. Ellie is one of the lucky ones in this all too common story, many aren’t. Too many dogs are abandoned after they start to grow up or if they don’t have the exact behavior characteristics that a family is looking for. If you decide to get a dog, make sure you know what you are doing.
