Jack Nicholson’s ‘mother’ was actually his grandmother

Jack Nicholson has acquired a reputation as one of modern cinema’s leading villains. Any controversy was usually defused by his wicked sense of humor and wolfish charm. However, there was one story from Jack’s past that went over his persona and messed up with his personal life.

Mother turned grandmother

It was at the age of 37 when he learned of a secret that had been kept for decades. In the year 1974, he discovered his mother, and Ethel Nicholson wasn’t who she said she was. His true identity came out of the blue when he came to know that Nicholson’s birth mother was June, the woman he believed was his sister.

That all of a sudden made Ethel his grandmother and “sister” Lorraine, his aunt. He was informed it by a reporter for Time magazine in the year 1974 when both his mother and grandmother were not alive. They had uncovered these details while researching for a cover story.

Nicholson’s life

It was in the year 1937 when Nicholson was born in Neptune City, NJ. Nicholson’s birth mother June was only seventeen years old and unmarried, her parents (Nicholson’s grandparents) agreed to raise him as their child without revealing his true parentage, and June would act as his sister.

Nicholson’s reaction

The revelation took in his stride or at least appeared to. According to Biography.com, Nicholson commented in a typical easy-going fashion and said it was such a dramatic event. It wasn’t at all traumatizing for him; after all, he found who his birth mother was. He said he is pretty well psychologically formed, and in fact, this revelation made quite a few things clear to him. He instead felt grateful knowing the truth.

Take of Hollywood

This event very well explains the eternal bachelor’s eventful relationships with various women. His longest-lasting partnership with actress Anjelica Huston came to an end after he impregnated Rebecca Broussard. According to Guardian, the 17-year romance between Huston and Nicholson came to a shuddering halt. He suffered both personal and creative crises at the same time, and the two often intermingled in his work.

Filmmaker Mark Cousins referred that he always felt wary about Nicholson the way he felt about a stag night. While Cousin’s assessment wasn’t shared by many, but it does sum up the idea of Jack as an anachronism in today’s marketplace. Though this point should be taken into consideration that Cousin acknowledges his talents as an actor even today, long after his reports came of semi-retirement, he still has armies of admirers.

Aside from a lot of speculations and perceptions about his character, Jack Nicholson appears to have been raised in a loving home that helped him get confidence to go out and achieve an extraordinary career.
